ABOUT BALATON
The hills of the north, seen from the south, the shape is formed by volcanic action, and even 2.5 million years after the extinction of the volcanoes their effect, though tamed, can still be felt if you look at the geographic forms and when you dip into thermal spas around Balaton.
The Lake Balaton takes a special place in all Hungarian’s heart. Everyone spent at least one summer of their childhood and everyone has or has a relative, who owns a summerhouse at Balaton. So the lake means much for Hungarians and when you visit it as a foreigner you feel it’s importance at once and discovering it’s beauties you’ll understand better why is it that important for our nation.
The lake has a northern and a southern shore (because of it’s shape we don’t name eastern and western coast). For visitors I always recommend the northern shore as interestingly most of the natural beauties, historical sights are concentrated along the northern cost of the lake, the southern has not that much to offer.
The water of Lake Balaton is most suitable for bathing in the three summer months. In this period its temperature is rarely less than 22 °C, and in high summer it is not unusual for it to reach 27–28 °C. Being a freshwater lake, it is ideal for bathing for those whose skin is sensitive to salt. With respect to sunbathing, the northern and southern shores of Lake Balaton are strikingly different from one another. On the northern shore the water deepens sooner: 30–50 m from shore it is deep enough to cover a person. But for those traveling with small children, there are even on the north beaches with pleasant shallow water in Keszthely, Zánka, Tihany, Balatonfüred. On the southern shore the water deepens very gradually, and in most places we can walk in up to five hundred meters without having to swim.
